Best Frog's Leap Merlot 2005 750ML

Frog's Leap Merlot 2005 750ML by

This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region. 90 POINTS - Wine Enthusiast - This Merlot comes down on the elegant side. It's not an opulent, hedonistic wine, but one of great structure and architecture. The cherry, berry, orange and herb tea flavors have an edge of dried herbs and tobacco. Distinguished, it should hold for a couple years. (2/1/2008)

From the Wine Maker:
A part of our family since 1990, Merlot holds a special place in theheart of Frogs Leap as the majority of the fruit comes from the Estatesurrounding our winery and historic Red Barn. Situated in the eastern partof Rutherford this vineyard is perfectly suited for growing Merlot due to itsrich, clay loam soils. We have found over the years that Merlot likes coolfeet and a warm body. The clay soils hold more moisture keeping theroot-zone cool, while the setting sun over the Mayacamas gives our vines anextra hour of evening sun. Sustainable and dry farming practices reveal thetrue personality of the varietal, which we describe as having red fruit flavorswith a soft, supple texture. We believe that our Merlot is another greatambassador of the Frogs Leap style - elegant, balanced and restrained.

The eastern side of the Rutherford appellation is lined with deep clay soilsthat are a great place to grow merlot. The 2005 Frog's Leap Merlot ispredominantly grown in these soils in the shadow of the Red Barn, yieldinga wine of intensity and structure that needs no blending partner. With adark garnet color, this wine's varietal character is revealed by its classicaromas of cherry blueberry and sage. Across the palate the wine's soft andplush texture is full of fruit flavors - ripe plums and red berries withunderlying notes of cigar box and green tea that leads to a supple mouthfeeland persistent finish, all supported by polished tannins.
